- For things aquatic on the island of 365 rivers, one is torn between the wild savage rollers of a naturally unkempt beach.
- Or the mineral fresh waters of the Pagua river.
- Or the 32 foot swimming pool enclosed by shrubs, or just bubbling around in the elegant spa pool in the patio courtyard.
- Horticulturists delight in the gardens that lead out to the riverside and estuary, blessed with a profusion of flora. Declared one of the most beautiful gardens in Dominica, one can lose oneself amongst some of the rarest plants in the Caribbean complete with an all-black lily.
- The hotel can arrange tailored tours around the island for you - visit Boiling Lake which is 270ft across and the 2nd largest in the world, or splash in hot pools.
- For the active, there is much to discover within 30 minutes: hiking on the back of nearby Horseback Ridge is a breathtaking experience.
- Boating or 'tubing' (a kind of rubber ring rafting) down a rain forest river towards Hibiscus valley has raised some playful eyebrows.
- Or take a boat trip around the coast; rum punch, lunch and snorkelling and fishing all included; go further afield for whalewatching.
- Dominica is rated one of the Top 5 dive destinations in the world.
- Go guided horseback riding in the mountains north of Portsmouth.
- You can take a trip around the Carib reserve with its pre-Colombian people and villages where human broth, I am reliably told, is just a vicious rumour; go nighttime crayfish fishing.
- Further adrift, you might wish to douse yourself in the comparatively easy hike to the solitude of Sari Sari falls or Crusoe surf with the chance of a turtle at Turtle Point in the north.
